PRT is looking ahead to 2045.
We’re also looking ahead to the NEXT project that impacts your daily transportation needs.
There are lots of choices that need to be made in order to plan for the future of our County’s transit system.
Employment trends, development patterns, travel demand, and changing technology are just some of the things we will need to understand in order to make the best choices for our City and our region.
The best way to do that is to know more about how a long-range transportation plan works.
We’re all in this together, so now that NEXTransit has been adopted, it’s time to get to work!
NEXTransit is the 25-year plan for Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
NEXTransit is a long-range transportation plan (LRTP). What is the purpose of an LRTP?
An LRTP is designed to be a comprehensive, long-term plan to guide investments and decision-making for transit agencies to plan, design, build, operate, and manage a regional transportation network over the next 25 years. The NEXTransit plan will detail how PRT can achieve and maintain excellence in its system and service while operating as a premier transit system for Allegheny County that supports and integrates the region's complementary planning efforts. Addressing the needs and wants of its communities and partners is an integral to the process.
Following the planning process, the NEXTransit plan will be an action-oriented strategy for making major investments and changes to service within PRT’s system, and will guide the agency, its planning partners, the public, and regional stakeholders in setting priorities for major transit investments through its horizon year of 2045. While updates will likely be made over the years, the guiding principles of NEXTransit will guide the region well into the future.
Why do we need the NEXTransit plan?
Two big reasons:
PRT must continue to provide high-quality transit service to residents and visitors in Allegheny county, as access to transportation is a key requirement for social and physical mobility. To do this, PRT must have the funding it needs to help our system operate and expand. NEXTransit will be used to guide financial decision-making and prioritizing future operations and projects.
Allegheny County is changing. Our population is shifting, impact to the climate is intensifying, technology is advancing, congestion continues to get worse, and economic realities are evolving. Our transit must evolve as well to continue connecting our riders to where they need to be. This is a great opportunity to set the stage for a transit network that future generations can be proud of.
