The 2045 NEXTransit Network for Allegheny County:

The draft plan is grounded in data analysis and your input. We’re ready to move it forward with you.

We heard all your needs, ideas, and big dreams for the future of our transit system. We’ve analyzed the numbers and assessed the investment feasibility to create a transit project map and a slate of programs for our 25-year planning horizon.

Can this all happen tomorrow? No. It will take time - but this long-range plan lets us prepare in advance and pursue the funding to make future improvements a reality.

Read the plan using the link above, or click on a category below for more details specifically about the projects, policies, and programs.

We’re anticipating the plan will be adopted by Port Authority’s Board of Directors in late September 2021.

How did we get here?

The NEXTransit Virtual Bus has been redecorated! Jump on board, and you’ll see some brand-new information to share. You can find information about the new network plan, survey results, the scoring metrics used to identify priority projects, and more information about some of the most exciting ideas. Are you new to NEXTransit?

This planning process started in spring 2020, so we are moving into the final few months of plan refinement. All our steps along the way though have been documented on this website and are available to view, along with other information, resources, and games we’ve prepared for you.

NEXTransit is nearly complete as we just released the draft plan for public comments on July 15, 2021. Stay tuned as we review and refine and look for the final plan to be adopted by Port Authority in September.

* The COVID-19 public health situation requires us to move our community engagement from in-person to a diverse set of communications tools, which you can learn about in our engagement plan here. We hope to meet with you in person as soon as it is safe to do so. We are diligently following the guidance of public health authorities every step of the way.

We’re glad we heard from you.

Whether you ride transit or not, your input has been very important.

We invited you to get on board with the plan and take a survey, draw on a map, tell us your story, and vote on your neighbors’ ideas.

Thank you!

Why did we make this plan?

If you’re a long-time transit rider, you’ve probably provided your suggestions to Port Authority at some point in the past, whether on a specific project, or as general feedback. There’s a lot of great work that’s been done over the years, with people just like you contributing a lot of great ideas.

In order to shape the future of transit in our region, we’re looking ahead to 2045 to understand the projects and funding sources that will be needed to keep everyone moving.

Living your best life should not require you to own a car.

Inclusive, welcoming, and equitable cities require accessible and convenient mobility choices.

NEXTransit is all about what’s NEXT for transit and mobility in our region.
